Overview

Carrier Commercial Refrigeration is a global leader in providing advanced refrigeration solutions for commercial and industrial applications. We are looking for a Refrigeration Commissioning Engineer (Rack Systems) specializes in the commissioning of commercial and industrial refrigeration rack systems. This role focuses on the successful startup, testing, and optimization of refrigeration racks, ensuring they operate according to design specifications and industry standards. The engineer will also have a solid understanding of other components of the refrigeration loop, including condensers, evaporators, and controls, to ensure full system integration and functionality. The role involves working closely with installation teams, contractors, and clients to ensure timely and efficient commissioning.

Responsibilities

  1. Rack Commissioning:
  • Lead the commissioning process for refrigeration rack systems, including multiple compressor configurations, oil management systems, and control systems;
  • Perform pre-commissioning checks to ensure proper installation and that all components (compressors, valves, sensors) meet design and manufacturer specifications;
  • Configure and calibrate control systems for optimal performance, including set points, safety parameters, and energy efficiency settings;
  • Execute system start-up and verify that refrigeration racks operate safely and according to design parameters, including pressure, temperature, and load balancing.
  1. Performance Testing & Optimization:
  • Conduct detailed performance testing on refrigeration racks, including pressure testing, leak detection, electrical testing, and system efficiency analysis;
  • Adjust system settings to ensure optimal performance, energy efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards;
  • Identify and resolve any performance issues related to rack components, ensuring compressors, suction groups, and oil systems operate in harmony.
  1. Integration with the Refrigeration Loop:
  • Collaborate with installation teams to ensure that refrigeration racks integrate seamlessly with other components of the system, including condensers, evaporators, and control units;
  • Verify the proper function of the entire refrigeration loop, including refrigerant flow, temperature control, and system pressure balance;
  • Troubleshoot issues with other parts of the refrigeration system, such as condenser and evaporator performance, to ensure the overall system operates efficiently.
  1. System Troubleshooting & Problem Solving:
  • Diagnose and resolve issues during commissioning related to refrigeration rack systems, including electrical, mechanical, and control system problems;
  • Collaborate with manufacturers and suppliers to resolve technical challenges with components, particularly compressors, controls, and valves;
  • Provide corrective actions and solutions for system malfunctions to ensure reliability and long-term performance.
  1. Documentation & Compliance:
  • Prepare and maintain detailed commissioning reports, documenting all tests, adjustments, and system configurations for client records;
  • Maintain documentation of control settings, safety parameters, and any modifications to system components.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Travel: 50-70% travel required
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, refrigeration technology, or a related field. Equivalent experience may also be considered.
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of experience in commissioning or maintaining refrigeration rack systems;
    • Hands-on experience with large commercial or industrial refrigeration systems, specifically rack systems and compressors.
  • Lead the commissioning process for refrigeration rack systems, including multiple compressor configurations, oil management systems, and control systems;
  • Perform pre-commissioning checks to ensure proper installation and that all components (compressors, valves, sensors) meet design and manufacturer specifications;
  • Configure and calibrate control systems for optimal performance, including set points, safety parameters, and energy efficiency settings;
  • Execute system start-up and verify that refrigeration racks operate safely and according to design parameters, including pressure, temperature, and load balancing.
  • Performance Testing & Optimization;
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong understanding of refrigeration rack systems, including compressor operation, oil management, refrigerant control, and system load management;
    • Familiarity with other key components of the refrigeration loop, such as condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, and control systems;
    • Proficiency in system diagnostics, performance optimization, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical components;
    • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and control schematics.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent communication and technical writing skills to document commissioning results and communicate with clients and teams;
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team;
    • Attention to detail and commitment to following safety and compliance guidelines.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with modern refrigeration rack control systems and energy-efficient technologies;
  • Knowledge of natural refrigerants (e.g., CO2, ammonia) and environmentally sustainable refrigeration practices;
  • Previous experience in the commissioning of refrigeration systems for supermarkets, cold storage, or industrial applications.
