Position Summary

The Refrigeration CO₂ (R744) In-House Trainer is responsible for the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of technical training programs supporting commercial refrigeration professionals working on CO₂ transcritical systems. This role ensures consistent, safe, and high-quality execution across service, commissioning, and technical support teams by standardizing training, best practices, and performance expectations. The trainer partners closely with Field Operations, Technical Support, Engineering, Controls, and EHS to reduce repeat issues, improve first-time fix rates, and accelerate technician competency development.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver instructor-led, hands-on, and blended training programs for CO₂ (R744) refrigeration systems.
  • Establish structured training paths (Foundations, Intermediate, Advanced) for technicians, commissioning engineers, controls specialists, and field leadership.
  • Create and maintain course materials including lesson plans, slide decks, lab exercises, simulations, job aids, assessments, and certification requirements.
  • Provide on-site coaching and mentorship during critical system start-ups, commissioning activities, and complex service events.
  • Standardize commissioning procedures, troubleshooting workflows, SOPs, checklists, and documentation across all regions.
  • Work closely with Technical Support to convert recurring field issues and root cause findings into targeted training content.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Controls teams to ensure training reflects current designs, sequences of operation, firmware, and best practices.
  • Coordinate with EHS to ensure all training reinforces CO₂ safety requirements, high-pressure protocols, and regulatory compliance.
  • Track training completion, certification status, and technician progression through LMS or internal tracking tools.
  • Continuously evaluate training effectiveness using field performance metrics, technician feedback, callbacks, and safety data.

Technical Training Scope

  • CO₂ Safety & Compliance: properties of CO₂, high-pressure hazards, pressure relief devices, lockout/tagout, confined space awareness, PPE, recovery and venting considerations, and emergency response.
  • System Fundamentals: transcritical operation, booster architectures, gas coolers, flash gas bypass, parallel compression, oil management, suction groups, and heat reclaim strategies.
  • Components & Piping: compressors, valves, pressure regulators, ejectors (where applicable), sensors, oil separators, accumulators, gas cooler fan control, and piping best practices.
  • Controls & Commissioning: controller logic, setpoints, I/O checkout, alarm management, sensor validation, network basics, trending, and performance verification.
  • Troubleshooting & Service: structured diagnostic approach, repeat failure prevention, moisture/contamination management, leak detection, evacuation, charging, and optimization.
  • Documentation & Reporting: commissioning reports, service documentation, as-built verification, root cause analysis (RCA), and corrective action tracking.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on commercial refrigeration experience.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience commissioning and servicing CO₂ (R744) transcritical refrigeration systems.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex system and controls issues.
  • Demonstrated experience training, mentoring, or leading technicians in a formal or informal capacity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Proficiency with digital collaboration tools and learning platforms (e.g., MS Teams, SharePoint, LMS systems).
  • Experience in adult learning, instructional design, or technical education (preferred).
  • Advanced CO₂ system experience including parallel compression, ejectors, or integrated energy optimization strategies (preferred).
  • Familiarity with major refrigeration control platforms (e.g., Carel, Danfoss, CPC, Emerson) (preferred).
  • OSHA 10/30 certification, manufacturer certifications, or equivalent safety credentials (preferred).
  • Experience supporting field commissioning programs or national rollout initiatives (preferred).

Ability to work safely in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and active construction environments. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and use standard refrigeration tools. Travel is expected up to 25–60% of the time, including occasional overnight and after-hours work during critical startups or training events.
